Final Project Proposal

CHOOSE A TEXT:

The article on neurodiversity from the Child Mind Institute really resonated with me. I agreed with the perspective that neurodiversity does not just mean having a neurological condition, but rather describes a natural variation in the way people feel, think, and experience the world. The fact that the school system is built to bring all students to the same standard at the same time, and students who can’t reach that standard are “abnormal,” completely neglects the fact that there are different types of intelligence. IEPs and 504s are intended to make things inclusive but ultimately just show that the school system is not built for all children.

WHO DO YOU WANT TO SHARE WITH?

One of my close friends was diagnosed with autism in college. I want to talk to them about their experience in the school system, especially because they are “high-achieving” and many high-achieving people, especially women, are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed because they can reach academic standards without help, even if they experience socioemotional challenges.

WHAT FORMAT MIGHT WORK FOR YOU?

I would either interview my friend or create a lesson plan (drawing on my psych/neuro background as well as my own experience) educating my students about identifying their unique kinds of intelligence and their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to learning.
